Registered Behavior Technician

Placer SELPA Registered Behavior Technician for Paraprofessionals

Why Train at the RBT level?

Specialized training is necessary in order to effectively implement evidence based practices that address students’ behavioral needs. Research indicates that specialized training improves the accuracy of teaching new behaviors and increases student learning.

What is an RBT?

Definition: The Registered Behavior TechnicianTM (RBT®)

  • A paraprofessional who practices under the close, ongoing supervision of a BCBA, or BCaBA.

  • Is primarily responsible for the direct implementation of behavior-analytic services. The RBT does not design intervention or assessment plans.

  • It is the responsibility of the RBT supervisor to determine which tasks an RBT may perform as a function of his or her training, experience, and competence. The BACB certificant supervising the RBT is responsible for the work performed by the RBT on the cases they are overseeing.

What are the training requirements?

  • 40 Hours covering all of the tasks and subtasks in the RBT Task List and the Professional and Ethical Compliance Code for Behavior Analysts that have been designated as being relevant for behavior technicians.

  • The training will be conducted online on your schedule

  • The training must be completed within a 90-day period

  • Pass the RBT Competency Assessment. The RBT Competency Assessment is the basis for the key eligibility and renewal requirements for the RBT credential. The assessment must be administered by a BACB certificant following completion of the 40-hour training requirement. The assessment involves direct-observation competencies based on tasks found on the RBT Task List. The assessment is complete when the behavior technician demonstrates competency in each task as determined by the assessor. The assessment must have been completed no longer than 90 days prior to applying.

  • Pass the RBT exam

What are the maintenance requirements?

  • Complete all maintenance requirements yearly

*Each RBT must obtain ongoing supervision for a minimum of 5% of the hours spent providing applied behavior-analytic services per month. For example, 5% of 30 hours would be 1.5 hours/week of supervision. This includes time spent working with students during classroom instruction, as well as social activities (recess). Supervision must include at least 2 face-to-face, synchronous contacts per month, during at least one of which the supervisor observes the RBT providing services. In-person, on-site observation is preferred. However, this may be conducted via web cameras, videoconferencing, or similar means in lieu of the supervisor being physically present. Although only one observation is required, the BACB encourages direct observation of service delivery as much as possible. At least 1 of the 2 supervision sessions must be individual (i.e., RBT and supervisor), but the other may occur in a small-group meeting.

What are the costs associated with the RBT Program?

  • $50/participant for online modules (90 days).

  • Substitute paraprofessionals to cover time out of class for online training – 40 hours.

  • Supervision maintenance: BCBA/BCaBA two face to face meetings/month equal to 5% of hours spent providing ABA services. For example, 2- 30 hour service weeks would be 3 hours of supervision time.

  • $50 exam fee (not to SELPA).

  • $35 annual renewal fee (not to SELPA).

Who is Relias Learning?

Relias Learning provides online training covering a wide variety of topics including those required by the BACB for preparing staff to take the RBT exam.  In addition to the training modules, Relias’ program provides progress and renewal tracking.

Is it possible to purchase the modules without the RBT track?

Yes! Districts may choose to purchase seats as a means to provide professional development without committing to an RBT program.  However, without the supervision component it is likely to be less effective relative to increasing ABA implementation skills.
